The magic window short story3/18/2023 ![]() How is it so powerful? It’s partly the psychological acuity – Karen’s obsession with red shoes is of manifold origin and convincingly drawn – and partly imagery: the shoe shop, the various shoes themselves, the coffins, the graveyard, the spiteful and perhaps jealous old soldier (spiteful and jealous old world, even). The Red Shoes by Hans Christian AndersenĪs with so many of Andersen’s tales, there’s almost nothing to this – a few pages, and even the telling is simple. Something anarchic and alarming – possibly evil – erupts into the delightfully ordered and middle-class world of this story, in which every street is known and money is ready for the granting of wishes, and birthdays are counted down to exactly and well in advance. But not so heavily – as people suppose …” And then – surely the most horrifying thing about going to stay with people: “Every Sunday evening, Clarinda understood, Mr Carstairs read aloud from about half past six until they had supper at eight.” Understandably, Clarinda has to escape. She goes to spend a weekend with his family “in one of the remote parts of a county where the remote parts are surprisingly many and extensive”, and where a rather eccentric soiree guest seizes on her as a kindred spirit. Poor old Clarinda has found herself engaged to Dudley, who has never missed a train in his life. The Standard of Living by Dorothy ParkerĪnother shop-based redemption narrative featuring two modern-day Match Girls. There ensues a quest in the wilderness, redemption and a cure.ĥ. With echoes of Senior, this story follows a stranger who arrives in the narrator’s close-knit community during a time of sickness, sets up house with one of the women and has a child with her. Ross is such a subtle writer, and I love the mordancy found in his work. I love everything about it, from the affirmation of the title to the final image. Probably my favourite contemporary short story. The narrator attempts to reclaim a source of power that has been stolen, while we enjoy a running gag about mental arithmetic. What You Pawn I Will Redeem by Sherman Alexie And then we have sentences such as this: “The other kept munching scented pastilles, which he took with an affected gesture out of an oval box of lilac enamel.” Delicious.ģ. The cutting-off of the immortal part – by moonlight, with a green-handled knife on wet sand – is particularly arresting, as is the shivery final paragraph. I couldn’t have understood it fully but I loved it for its language and imagery and for its genuine spookiness. This strange and metaphysical story, inspired by Andersen’s The Little Mermaid and The Shadow, was my favourite as a child (I owned the beautiful edition illustrated by Harold Jones). ![]() More pricing-up of the soul, albeit for different motives. The Fisherman and His Soul by Oscar Wilde And the help these incomers offer is very much conditional.Ģ. There’s much fun to be had in watching the islanders’ diplomatic handling of the missionaries, who are fine as far as education and healthcare and food parcels go, but “no use at all” when it comes to spiritual ills. This story is full of delicate irony and of all kinds of surprising magic. ![]() “She was enchanted when I took an Atlas I had borrowed from Parson and showed her first the world where our tiny island and India were located so far apart and then a map of India itself, like our island colored red.” Arrival of the Snake-Woman by Olive Senior ![]() Magic is a resort of the dispossessed as much as of the powerful, a rival to the established orthodoxy, and some of these stories also show that precept in action.ġ. Witches, healers and sorcerers feature in the stories I’ve chosen, but in a few of my Top 10 the enchantment comes from elsewhere – as it often does in my own stories – ineffable and mysterious. So The Little Match Girl (the heartwarming story of an abused child-labourer hallucinating as she dies of hypothermia – Merry Christmas one and all!) might become, down the generations, Frances Hodgson Burnett’s A Little Princess. I think they still exist, in stories that don’t announce themselves as fantasy or even as magical realism, but they have become better at camouflaging themselves amid ordinary life, especially when the magic is the legacy of an older culture that has been suppressed but not quite extinguished. ![]()

Linkedin summary examples3/17/2023 ![]() ![]() LinkedIn profile summaries follow a pretty straightforward and easily replicable format. The Structure of a LinkedIn Profile Summary Use your LinkedIn summary as a creative platform to express who you are beyond your career and make people want to work with you in the future. Someone who comes to your LinkedIn profile to read your summary will most likely be more interested in your character than your professional history. Get creative and let your personality shine through. Include statistics or other empirical proof of your abilities when possible to strengthen your summary. ![]() When discussing your achievements and skills, be as specific as possible. Instead, focus on your most significant accomplishments and skills that make you stand out from the crowd. You don’t want to simply reiterate your resume. You want your LinkedIn profile summary to impress the reader. However, make sure the reader understands your job by the time they finish reading your LinkedIn profile summary. You don’t necessarily have to make this the first sentence of your summary because you’ll likely want to use something catchier than just your job title. Initiate the reader into your summary by stating your professional responsibilities and the company you work for, if applicable. Think about what action you want the reader of your summary to take once they’ve digested the information. A freelancer who wants to attract clients to work for will handle their profile completely differently than a business that wants to attract sales. Before writing a word of your LinkedIn summary, you need to decide your profile’s goal. Using a first-person voice can give your summary a more conversational tone.įor almost all job-seekers, we recommend the first person voice (“I” instead of “he/she/they”) - unless you’re a major celebrity, folks reading your profile know that you’re the one who wrote it.ĭecide what action do you want the reader to take. The first decision you have to make when it comes to your LinkedIn profile summary is if you want to write in the first or third person. Use your LinkedIn profile summary to explain what you do and why you do it.ĭecide on first or third person. Let your personality shine through in your summary by telling stories, sharing about your personal life, and being creative in your writing. ![]() Your LinkedIn profile summary should include your current job, your strengths and accomplishments, and a call to action. While it may feel unnecessary with all the other information on your profile, your LinkedIn profile summary is your professional introduction to an audience that can help you improve and further your career.īecause of the importance of a solid LinkedIn profile summary, we’ve put together some instructions on how to write one, some example summaries to use for inspiration, and some more information on what LinkedIn profile summaries are and why they’re important. ![]()

Preschool sight words list3/17/2023 ![]() ![]() As Dolch words are often abstract service words, they can be harder for dyslexics to learn to spell compared to concrete nouns, which may be more easily linked to an image or mnemonic device. Individuals with dyslexia may struggle to read even the most frequently encountered words. Why Dolch words are hard for children with dyslexia to learn Sight reading helps dyslexic students skip the decoding process. Yet dyslexia impacts on the initial stages of language decoding and can cause learners to struggle with activities involving reading and spelling. In addition to children and beginner readers, the Dolch word list is particularly helpful for individuals with dyslexia and other learning difficulties.įor people without dyslexia, vocabulary size and literacy skills go hand in hand: reading is the most effective way to build breadth and depth in vocabulary and having a larger vocabulary greatly enhances reading comprehension skills. Learn more tips and strategies for teaching sight words. ![]() TOP TIP: Did you know both in first and second language reading, individuals need to be able to recognize 90% of the words in a sentence in order to make good guesses and acquire new vocabulary from context? (1) Sight reading speeds up reading and frees up cognitive resources so they can be used to process less frequent vocabulary and enhance comprehension. While teaching reading to children starts with the decoding process, as children begin to recognize more words, they gradually transition to sight reading. ![]() This is because adults do not sound out words, rather they sight read.Īdult reading is about recognizing the collection of letters that make up a word and then scanning the mental lexicon for the best meaning candidate, based on the context in which the word appears and the topic of the text. ![]() Have you ever been asked to read a paragraph where all of the words are spelled incorrectly? As long as the first and last letters of the word remain intact, the internal letters can be scrambled into any order and it is still possible to read the paragraph normally. This recognition process mimics the way we read language as adults. This involves mapping phonemes to graphemes, also known as sounding out words-a challenging activity in English given the irregularity of the language’s spelling.ĭolch recommended that his list be memorized so children could immediately recognize the words they most frequently encounter - without having to sound them out. Learn more about teaching children to read and 6 important pre-literacy skills.Ĭhildren who are learning to read at a first-grade level must first decode words on a page. The reason behind this decision was that nouns tend to be related to specific content and the more generic “service” words could be found across many different kinds of books and reading materials, regardless of topic.ĭolch later released a list of 95 Dolch list nouns, which can be used in beginning reading instruction as sight words that most facilitate comprehension. He narrowed his collection to 220 words and chose to leave nouns off of the list. This was a genre he was familiar with given he wrote and published many collections of stories, including interpretations of Aesop’s fables and even a title today’s Internet would fall head over heels for, I like cats: True cat stories.ĭolch recognized the value in teaching first-grade readers high frequency words without forcing children to memorize a list of 500+ terms. Dolch worked at the University of Illinois and based the list on the most common words in children’s books at the time. The Dolch word list was created by Edward William Dolch in 1936 and first published in Problems in Reading in 1948. Those students who are learning English as a second or additional language may be tasked with mastering Dolch words in beginner level classes. Individuals with dyslexia and other learning difficulties may find memorizing the list a useful activity because it facilitates the development of reading and spelling skills.Īdults who are struggling readers can also benefit from learning Dolch words. However, it isn’t just grade school children who can benefit from learning the Dolch word list. Think of the most common English articles, prepositions, conjunctions, adjectives, adverbs and verbs ( a, and, away, big, blue, can, come, down) and you’ll get a good idea of the list.ĭolch words, also known as sight words, account for between 50-75% of all vocabulary found in grade school reading material. Learning to recognize them automatically can facilitate fluency in reading. In fact, every word in The Cat in the Hat is on the Dolch list.ĭolch words are high frequency English vocabulary commonly used to teach children to read. Seuss you know a good portion of it already. Haven’t heard of the Dolch list? Don’t worry. ![]()

Rebaslight blinking3/17/2023 ![]() I'll update this as with my progress figuring it out as a wiki style post if I can resolve through the logs what's actually causing this type of drift. If I don't figure this out I might consider changing back over. Note: I'm not using the de-settings-sync extension at this time, having migrated over in the last year to the built in sync solution. Is there anything I should check that prevents extensions from being synced with the built in Visual Studio Code Settings sync. My understanding is that key bindings were unique per platform, but extensions should be. This didn't fix it though as it is still drifting. ![]() My interim solution was to disable all extensions and then parsed the backed-up json with PowerShell to convert into code install-extension commands. Netflix live tv3/17/2023 ![]() ![]() This supply line often creates the water collected in the Air Filter/Water Trap on the machine. Next the warm tank passes warm air to the supply hose, and the hose starts to warm. Less and less moisture is captured in the tank as the tank warms. While some of the hot air’s moisture is captured in the tank, some is not. Compressed air is created, and the hot air warms the tank above room temperature. This is how you get water in the tank: the tank acts as the first air cooler. Possibly the compressor tank size is small making this condition happen, but what is most likely happening is the compressor tank starts at room temperature then begins to warm as hot compressed air enters the tank. That time varies based on your hose size, tank size, gun size, and compressor pump speed. If this sounds like your setup, most likely hot air traveling to the blasting cabinet is creating moisture inside the cabinet and preventing abrasive flow after about 30 minutes of blasting. This problem commonly arises when the air compressor is close to the blasting cabinet and just large enough, or maybe a bit too small, to operate the machine without allowing the compressor to start, stop and cool during the blasting operation. Unfortunately, hot air isn’t something you can easily diagnose on sight. Air filters do not remove humidity in the air. This moisture is then collected in an air filter water trap on the machine itself. Keep in mind Air Filter/Water Traps only removes moisture already in a liquid state in the compressed air line. If you are collecting water in the air filter water trap it is indicating the last condition, the next section is for you! This problem is easy to control, just visually check and remove the water when visible to eliminate the problem. If you don’t drain the air filter/water tap when it is full the water can easily pass into the cabinet. ![]() This requires you to switch to new abrasives far more frequently and becomes very costly. ProTip: Using any abrasive in excess of its maximum impact velocity will drop its recycle rate to one or two times. Just like changing the oil in your car, the abrasive in your blast cabinet has a finite lifespan. Drain the abrasive, throw it away, and replace it with a new, larger abrasive. When it’s worn out, and no longer part of the recycle process, it requires an abrasive change out. As abrasive gets smaller, its angle of repose gets greater and greater. Different abrasive types have different recycle rates, and typically using a larger abrasive offers more recycles. It should be visually apparent if this solution eliminates your problem.Īs you use any abrasive it wears out, gets physically smaller, and takes longer to clean. If you find you are constantly back pressuring the nozzle, holding something over the nozzle to reverse the abrasive flow, you most likely have too much trash in the abrasive.Īs you use your blasting cabinet, abrasive lands in low airflow places and is no longer part of the recycling process. If the abrasive valve is starving after a short time using the machine, try adding more abrasive to your system. ![]() Both common household items will separate out any items that may restrict abrasive flow. ![]() Most machines have a scalper screen that captures these items, but if your machine doesn’t have a scalper screen, drain and sift the abrasive to remove nested trash you can manually replace abrasive media after sifting it through a window screen or pasta strainer. Typically it’s things like decals, gaskets, rust chunks, and carbon pieces that cause issues. Just imagine turning over an hourglass that has marbles in it along with sand, you can see how quickly things would get stopped up. Often particles removed from the part being processed get into the abrasive and sieve down to the abrasive flow valve, blocking abrasive flow to the gun. Read below for our media blasting troubleshooting for our sand blasting tips.ĥ Common Causes of Abrasive Flow Problems and How to Fix them Updated January 2022: Do you often wonder why your blast cabinet has abrasive flow problems after roughly 30 minutes of operation? It’s a common issue that we field questions about, and we’ve compiled a list of the five most common culprits. ![]()
